Microsoft has informed its users about a new bug in its Office products. The latest versions of Office applications such as Outlook, Word and OneNote have been experiencing various crashing issues. Users reported that the applications crashed even when they were just typing. Microsoft shared a temporary solution for this issue.
Why are Office applications crashing?
According to Microsoft, some customers have reported that their Office apps suddenly shut down while typing or using features such as spell checking. This crash problem was reported in applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote.
Users experiencing crashes can check error code 0xc0000005 in the Windows Event Viewer to confirm if they are experiencing the same issue. According to the company, versions 2407 Build 17830.20138 or higher are affected by this bug.
Microsoft stated that the problem was caused by a version mismatch between Office applications and language packs. It said that the crashing modules vary depending on which language pack the user has installed.
As a workaround, Microsoft advised users to suggest the Office application from the command line or Control Panel. If the crash persists, users are advised to uninstall and reinstall the language pack.
The company said it is investigating the root cause of crashes in Office apps and is working on a solution. However, at least for now, reinstalling the language pack seems to be enough for Microsoft 365 apps.
